Cassie René Bernall foi uma das 13 vítimas do massacre de Columbine em 1999, 

no Instituto Columbine, onde os estudantes Eric Harris, de 18 anos, e Dylan Klebold , de 17 anos, alvejaram vários colegas e professores.

Testemunhas relataram que um dos atiradores, Eric Harris, perguntou a Bernall se ela acreditava em Deus momentos antes de fatalmente dar um tiro a Cassie. Ela respondeu "sim".

 Se ela dissesse não, eles poupariam a sua vida, mas ela disse sim, mesmo sabendo que seria morta.

. Esta história, levou-a ser apresentada como um mártir por alguns cristãos, e serviu de inspiração para várias canções, incluindo "Cassie" de Flyleaf.
